On July 17, NJUIT's International Education College and the LSBU-NJUIT Joint Institute jointly formed the "Silk Road Star" summer social practice team, which traveled to a summer daycare program for employees' children at The Third Construction Co., Ltd. of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division in Xianlin Subdistrict, Qixia District, Nanjing. The practice activity aligned with the university's 2026 "Go to the Countryside" summer social practice theme of "Contributing to the 15th Five-Year Plan: Youth Shouldering Responsibility for Chinese Modernization." Focusing on two directions—community education support and intangible cultural heritage preservation—the team leveraged the bilingual strengths of Chinese and international students to enrich the summer lives of local children and build a sustainable university-community collaborative education platform.

The program featured distinctive volunteer services combining English language immersion and intangible cultural heritage experiences.

At the practice site, Chinese and international students served as volunteer teachers, creating an immersive and engaging English classroom. A team member from Ethiopia adopted a teaching model combining situational instruction with interactive games, conducting vocabulary lessons around everyday themes such as fruits, animals, and colors. Lively English nursery rhymes were used to lead the children in reading and interactive activities. The classroom atmosphere was relaxed and enthusiastic, with children eagerly raising their hands and speaking out boldly. Through songs and games, their anxiety about learning English was eased, effectively stimulating their interest in foreign languages. The initiative brought internationalized, engaging teaching resources to the summer daycare program, fulfilling the practice goal of supporting grassroots education.

Following the English session, the practice team concurrently opened an intangible cultural heritage workshop, using traditional herbal sachet making as a vehicle to preserve traditional craftsmanship and cultivate an artisan spirit. Team members first introduced the children to the historical significance of sachets, then carefully explained the medicinal properties of herbs such as mugwort, perilla, and mint. Step-by-step guidance was provided as the children filled the sachets with herbs and tied the embroidered pouches. The children remained focused and actively engaged throughout the hands-on process, developing practical skills while gaining close exposure to the unique heritage of Chinese intangible cultural heritage crafts. This promoted the immersion of traditional culture in young minds.

A community representative noted that the university-community collaborative practice base can effectively integrate university talent resources with community grassroots service platforms, achieving two-way supply of educational resources and mutual empowerment of university and community development. The faculty lead from the college stated that the college has consistently adhered to a practice-oriented education philosophy. Taking the establishment of this base as a new starting point, the college will continue to organize young faculty and students to engage in grassroots volunteer services, guiding both Chinese and international youth to gain education, develop competence, and make contributions through social practice serving the people—transforming social practice into a vivid and dynamic "comprehensive ideological and political education course."

This practical activity represents a concrete implementation by the college of the university's 2026 summer "Go to the Countryside" and "Return to Hometown" social practice deployment, fully demonstrating the dedication and mission-driven spirit of Chinese and international students from the International Education College and the LSBU-NJUIT Joint Institute. Moving forward, the university and community partners will rely on the collaborative practice base to regularly conduct diversified volunteer activities including bilingual classes, intangible cultural heritage education, and cultural outreach. The two sides will continue to refine the long-term mechanism for university-community collaborative education, using youth volunteer service to support grassroots cultural development and inject youthful energy into rural revitalization and community governance, striving to write a practical answer sheet of youth serving Chinese modernization.
